WordPress Plugin Competition; I have an awesome idea

I’m done with coursework for now. I’ve been doing it for ages. Three hours constitutes as ages, methinks. So, I’ve taking a little break. I’ll start again at ten. I really need to finish both pieces tonight, since it’s weeks after the deadline and the marks have to be sent off Tuesday. I have to hand in both pieces of coursework… tomorrow, really.

Anyway, lets forget about that for a little while, it’s giving me a headache.

There’s a WordPress plugin competition! I was thinking the other day that I really wanted WordPress to do something for me, and I couldn’t find a plugin for it that works well. So, I might as well write it myself and potentially win a prize! The caveat to that though, is that I can’t tell people what my idea is, else they’ll steal it so I’m not even sure if it’s a good idea. Meh, I need it, so if nothing comes of it, at least I’ve gotten what I want. In the process, I’ll be learning new stuff about WordPress so it’s a win-win even if I lose.

The competition opens after my exams, so I won’t be having to mix it with reivision. I might have to mix it with finding a job though… If I win, it’d look awesome on my CV though!

Finding a job is another stress point (though, not too much), so I’m not going to talk about that either just yet.

I got my laptop back!

DHL told me that they’d be at my house anywhere between 0900 and 1630, which must mean that they allow the drivers to pick which houses they want to go to at what time. Seven and a half hours is a pretty wide estimate time. I couldn’t go in the shower till the driver turned up at 1300 because I was scared of him turning up whilst I was in the shower and then deciding I wasn’t in since I hadn’t heard the door.

It was the same guy that picked up my laptop, and turned up the Friday before he was supposed to pick it up to, so maybe there’s only one Wednesbury guy? The problem with DHL compared to Royal Mail is that they only have a few distribution centres – my laptop was being kept in Sheffield which is freaking miles away – whilst if it was Royal Mail there’s a distribution centre right around the corner from me. I mean, I can literally see it from my window.

Anyway, I got my laptop back! They replaced his battery, so I know how three hours lifespan again, and they replaced his keyboard. I didn’t ask for that, but some of the keys had become shiney from over use. I wouldn’t have replaced it since it was still working perfectly, but meh. New keyboard! Really clean screen too.

Now, I really need to do that coursework.

High quality audio porn

My sister went off and acquired (through undisclosed methods) The Black Parade because she didn’t have access to my CD. She downloaded the 567kb/s version. I may masturbate to this.

I think I’d die if I ever got flac versions. (And I found a codec for them for Windows Media Player.)

It’d be interesting to see the SERPs refferals to this page.

Surrounded by idiots

I’m currently on one of the computers at mum’s which is only slightly better than the ones at college; right click works!

Anyway, DHL came to drop off my laptop Friday, but no one was in the house. Then my sister forgot to bring the form they posted to my mum’s so I have to wait till Monday to even ask them to bring him again. I hope they don’t charge for that, or decide to get rid of him…

On an unrelated note: Ober got me playing World Of Warcraft. That wasn’t a very smart idea. I’ve played it for hours, and miss it already… Ober forbid me to buy it till I finish with my exams.

I has a Blood Elf

Why noone gets any work done on these computers

I’m using a college computer, since Niimo is busy with his being fixed and all. These computers are terrible. Really, they’re horrible.

I’m having to adjust to using a mouse again. Once you’ve had the precision of using a tracer pad for a year or so, then you’re given a mouse which doesn’t seem to be able to move in increments of a pixel (it prefers to move in ten pixel chunks), it’s really annoying.

It’s not just that which is annoying. The computer just doesn’t fracking work.

They’ve disabled right click. Who disables right click? I managed to get at my flash drive, and it’s installed start.exe, which I’m sure is a lovely programme. And I can’t install the 2007 patch for Word, so I can do zero work.

Oh right, I could convert it online. But I wouldn’t be able to download the converted file. Joy.

(I’ll fix this post when I get to a computer that works.)

I’d be okay with AdSense in my Google Talk

I was using MSN and thinking “that advertisement for The Sun is insulting, but it doesn’t bother me”. That got me thinking, would I be bothered if Google Talk had adverts? The problem is that the reason the MSN ads don’t bother me is most likely because they’ve always been there and now I have ad-blindness for them, but either way I thought I’d see what it’d look like with Google Talk having ads.

Here’s how a normal conversation looks at the moment:

Gtalk normal chat window

Gtalk normal chat window

Here’s how I’d figure it’d look with adverts. I decided that, since Google already has a huge ad infrastructure with thousands of clients, they’d definitely go with AdSense and make it contextual to your conversation.

Google Talk with adverts

Google Talk with adverts

Obviously, it’d look much nicer if Google did it.

Some people may be a bit worried about it being contextual with Google “reading” there conversations, but it’s really only the same as they do with the adverts in Gmail. It’s not like there’s a human reading and picking which advert for each conversation.

Also, like I said in that image, it’d be annoying and would slow down the lightweightness of the chat if the adverts updated every few seconds. In that image I said maybe every ten minutes it could update, but I’d expect it to be around half an hour, to be honest.

Plus, I’d only want the adverts to be useful. It’s annoying when you search for “telnet help” and the ads are “Get your telnet help from Ebay!”.

I’d only want the URL (so I know where I’m going) and the name for the link on the window, because the description would really just be too long. Even in my example, I’d say that two lines would be pushing it. I like Gtalk because it’s not bulky like MSN has gotten (take a look at an MSN conversation and see how much wasted whitespace there is).

Doesn’t just have to be adverts either, Google could chuck in a few info boxes. If someone mentions an address, the box could change to a link to the Google Map for it.

Of course, I don’t want them going over board with this. I hate how MSN added the search functionality to chat. And so long as the ads were below the textbox and not above it I’d be happy.

Well that’s… efficient of DHL

The DHL just came and was like “Hai. I was just passing and thought I’d check if you’d like your laptop picked up now.”

Well, no. I don’t. That’s why I specifically asked for it to be picked up Tuesday and not today. Still though, it was nice of them to check. I’m a bit worried about what DHL are doing with my address before they need it though. Data protection act and stuff.

Toshiba’s coming to take him away!

After I noticed my battery life dropped hugely, I decided to phone Toshiba and get them to come take a look. I got through to some Indian guy, on a really crappy line which sucks. But, if you’re going to be open till midnight, you have to go where the call centers are cheapest.

I got a phone call from another company, which I guess Toshiba sublets their repairs to, and set up the date for the 22nd, next week for them to pick him up and take him away. I’m actually nervous about being away from my laptop for a while. I hope they don’t take him for too long…

Anyway, on the phone I mentioned that since it’s just the battery they’re checking could they leave my data alone, and the woman (who was English and on a considerably better line) said that’s fine. She asked for me to include my Windows user password though, which I thought was weird. I’m not sure if that’s standard procedure, but I guess they can’t start up the laptop without it. PC World just reset back to factory defaults as soon as they got it.

I think that since the laptop is still in warranty (extended warranty too, but it’s still in standard warranty) that I won’t have to pay anything. I’m fairly sure that the pick up and check is free… I didn’t ask though.

Before they collect him, I’ll have to do some cleaning. Stuff like, removing cookies and cache. I’m really not sure if I should be trusting Toshiba with my data, so I’ll make sure there’s nothing they can do any harm with. I’ll obviously back up pretty much everything. If I had 40Gb spare, I’d totally make a disk image and upload it… somewhere.

Eventide: my version of the WordPress theme Dusk

You probably noticed that my template is a lot like Dusk, but with a few changes. I’ve changed quite a bit, and fixed a few bugs since I think that Beccary has kinda stopped updating, and also, her website has a virus on it, somehow. (All I know is that whenever I go to her homepage, Norton pops up.)

Screenshot, minipreview of Eventide

So, you can go ahead and download Eventide – my version of Dusk – over on my goodies page. It’s under GNU GPL, so use it however you want.

My battery life

I’ve had niimo, my laptop, for less than a year now; I got him on the 27th of June-ish. And in less than a year my battery life has dropped from two and a half hours to forty-five minutes.

Battery ish dead

When I got the laptop I was told to only have it connected to the power when it needed to be charged; so I’ve religiously unplugged it when it gets to 100% and plugged it back in when I only have 2 or 3 minutes left. I dunno what’s happened…
